Ok, can't answer most of your questions, but it is likely, rather than
getting kicked off gmail, that you were kicked offline - your connection
dropped. Because Gmail auto saves regularly, it's usually not necessary to
save as you're writing; but if you're writing a reasonable amount, it is
worth keeping your on the counter that tells you how long ago gmail last
saved your draft, and doing a manual save if it's longer than you'd like.
The reason your husband's experience was different is because he has a
separate user profile on your computer, so the browser will have personal
settings for him, an individual profile...
