It's just my opinion, mind you ... but I think what's driving Google's
use of icons rather than text labels, is recognition of the fact that
their user base is international.
In Gmail, you and I have the option to have those buttons display text
labels again. If you want that, enable it!
On my screen display, the buttons could have been made a lot smaller
... if leaving space for ads was the only reason. Since they didn't
make them smaller, I don't think that was the reason.
