Me too, except, not only Protel, also, Altera's Quartus simulations would mysteriously quit out everything without saying a word.  I did a full clean re-install
of my XP-Pro 2 days ago.  So far, everything now runs clean & smooth and faster than before, however, 2 days is not a true longevity test.
