The Fairmount Park Commission is considering a change in its policy of
closing Martin Luther King and Kelly drives to allow for weekend
Commission Chairman Robert N.C. Nix III asked the park's administrative
staff to take a look at alternative policies and report back next month.
The scenic roadways flanking the Schuylkill River are increasingly important
to traffic flow from the northwest end of the city into downtown.
The traditional closing of MLK Drive (formerly known as West River
Drive) until 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays becomes problematic when a boat
regatta or other recreational event requires vehicular traffic to be
rerouted around a section of Kelly Drive.
The resulting traffic snarl makes it difficult for visitors to get to other
recreation areas and historic mansions in the park, and attractions like the
Zoo, and the Mann Center for the Performing Arts.
