Actually, all the OS's provide a better than 8 bit path for setting
video output table values. Whether the video card drivers and digital
connections provide a better than 8 bit path is harder to ascertain.
It's difficult to find better than 8 bit/component frame buffers
though. (The significance comes down to whether you are trying
to display images on a wide gamut device, how low the noise is
in the images, or whether you are just trying to compensate
for non-linearity of the device channels/change the white point/change the
brightness.)
