I understood that both Miscrosoft(with Vista WGF) and Apple (with OSX Quartz Extreme)
were/have moved to a frame buffer rendering model based on 3D graphics hardware,
and that the high end hardware uses more than 8 bits/component to do its 3D graphics
(the latest cards using 16 bit floating point in fact, to represent high dynamic
range (HDR) values.)
Now whether WGF and Quartz Extreme actually use the 16 bit/component modes for
their ordinary desktop & windows, and whether it is practical to do so,
is an interesting question. Whether the 16 bit/component can get out to the
monitor at more than 8 bit/component precision is also an interesting question
(usually the 3D image HDR 16 bit floating point values have to be compressed
using a HDR rendering curve or transform to map the values to the normal
display gamut.)
From the design of the DVI interface, it appears that the needs of high quality
display have not been at the forefront of consideration in the design. I guess
there will have to be yet another interface standard to accommodate digital
connection of high bit depth and high resolution displays... (Requiring
4 DVI connectors isn't terribly practical).
