Then what you should have done was simply remove or fix the "buildreq" for netpbm.  Figure out what provides "giftopnm", for instance, on your platform.

It doesn't error out on any platform that I've tested... What release of
autoconf/automake are you using?  If it's a bug, it's probably a bug in
one of those packages.

Automake --version gives version 1.9.4 (Tom Tromey RedHat)
Is that too old? Both are installed by default on Mandriva 2006.0.

It's provided by "mailcap" on Red Hat systems, at least.  I'm not sure
if the format of the file provided by cups is supported by Courier.
