Whoa, whoa, whoa, that's a very old one, the current net-snmp is 5.4.
Install 5.4 and see how things go.  Remember that there is a subdirectory
named "perl" in the net-snmp source directory, after you've installed
the new client libraries cd there and run Makefile.PL to install the
net-snmp 5.4 perl modules.

Also, tell us your hardware and software platform, that is always
relevant information.

Otherwise it sounds like you are on the right track.  After you've gotten
the net-snmp 5.4 source code, check the file net-snmp-5.4/perl/SNMP/
and the new() subroutine, see if it's using all the parameters that you're
passing in.
