Re: Subject: Animals that keep Shabbos
Chaim M. asked:
>>I read (Rinuna Shel Torah, citing Rav Yakov Emden in Migdal Oz,
>>section Beis Midos/Aliyas ha'Teva - see attached, also available at
>>www.dafyomi.co.il/general/discuss/chaimm031-1.pdf) that the dove
>>doesn't rip up pasture, grass and even leaves from trees, nor does
>>it cut them in order to eat them on Shabbat.<<
---
The Kollel replied:
>>It is only the dove that will not each such foods... The proof for
>>this is from Sefer Divrei Shaul (Rav Yosef Shaul Natanson, the
>>author of Sho'el u'Meshiv) on Parshas Noach (Bereshis 8:9), who
>>cites the Migdal Oz that you mentioned. The Divrei Shaul writes
>>that the reason why the dove would not pluck the leaf on Shabbos is
>>that the Gemara (Shabbos 49a) likens the Jewish people to a dove,
>>since the Mitzvos protect Klal Yisrael in the same way that the
>>wings protect the dove.<<

Chaim M. asks:
Shalom Ha'Rav Bloom! Thanks you for delving on this issue.
(a) If it tell that to a Iyid (that even Lashon haKodesh don't know)
that do not shomer Shabbat (and expressed to me that for him Shabbat
is like the others days of the week) and after that he will go,
search for a Yonah and do the test(Bedika):
Will i have a problem with the mitzvah of: "Lifnei Iyver lo titen michshol"?.
(b) May i tell this wisdom to a Nochri that is looking for the truth?
Maybe he would like to do the test.
(c) Must it be a "female" Yonah? Like this: (see the file: "Paloma")
Best wishes
Chaim
---------------------------------------
The Kollel replies:
(a) You will not have a problem of "Lifnei Iver."
It appears from the sources that it is not certain that this test
will work. (Rav Yakov Emden, who is the most widely cited source, in
fact reports that he had "heard" about this phenomenon, and it
appears that he does not state that it is a fact. In addition, the
Divrei Shaul (whom I cited in my earlier answer) also does not appear
to write that it always holds true.) Therefore, we may say that if
the test does work, then it may well be Mekarev the Jew to keep
Shabbos from now on. If the test does not work, then it will not be
"Lifnei Iver" because anyway he does not keep Shabbos.
(b) You may tell the wisdom to a Nochri who is looking for the truth.
(However I think it may be best not to give the impression that the
test always works.)
(c) Rashi (Bereshis 8:11) writes that the Yonah which Noach sent away
was male. Therefore, it appears that the Yonah of the test does not
have to be female.
Here are another two sources that I found about Shabbos in nature:
1. Rav Chayim Palaji zt'l writes (Kaf ha'Chayim 27:34) that if one
says "Shabbat!" to a spider, it will stand still and will not move
from its place. Rav Palaji writes that many people say that the above
"Segulah" is "Baduk u'Menuseh" -- tested and proven.
2. What will Shabbos be like when the Mashi'ach comes? The Midrash
Shocher Tov on Tehilim (chapter 73, cited by Inyano Shel Yom Moadim,
part 1, page 401, by Rav David Falk of Ramot, Yerushalayim) writes:
"Rebbi Simon said in the name of Rebbi Shimon Chasidah: In this
world, if someone goes to pluck a fig on Shabbos, the fig does not
say anything to him. But in future times, if someone will go to pluck
a fig on Shabbos, the fig will scream and say, 'Today is Shabbos!'"
Kol Tuv,
Dovid Bloom
