[e-users] Sound on Toshiba laptop with e16? E-SD.epplet is segfaulting

Listmates,

(I promise I'm running out of questions) However, one other stumbling block I
have run across is trying to get sound working in e16. I have esound
installed, but when I enable sound through Settings -> Sound, X locks up and I
have to CTRL+F1 to drop to console and shutdown xdm (kdm) and then kill the
remaining Xorg processes -9 before I can restart X.

The laptop is a Toshiba 205D (running openSuSE 11.0 and also Arch Linux) with
the following sound card (lspci output):

00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia

The card uses the intel sound module and the following modules are loaded in
openSuSE:

21:38 alchemy:/usr/share/e16> lsmod | grep snd
snd_pcm_oss            72320  0
snd_mixer_oss          36224  1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_seq                87696  0
snd_seq_device         26772  1 snd_seq
snd_hda_codec_realtek   309764  1
snd_hda_intel          55472  0
snd_hda_codec         112128  2 snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hda_intel
firmware_class         27776  2 pcmcia,snd_hda_codec
snd_hwdep              28552  1 snd_hda_codec
snd_pcm               123016  3 snd_pcm_oss,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec
snd_timer              45712  2 snd_seq,snd_pcm
snd                   106776  10
snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_hwdep,snd_pcm,snd_timer
soundcore              26000  1 snd
snd_page_alloc         29328  2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm

After enabling sound, X locking up, and restarting X, I have to edit
e_config--0.0.cfg and set 'sound.enable = 0' before e16 will start again
(otherwise it tries to start, but never gets out of the framebuffer before
locking.) I don't know if it matters, but I have  DirectFB-1.2.8-6.2
installed.

The syslog errors show E-SD.epplet is segfaulting (big clue huh?) but I'm not
sure how to trouble shoot the thing. The E-SD segfault error is:

Oct 29 14:13:03 alchemy kernel: E-SD.epplet[16354]: segfault at 8 ip
7f6fccc4b41a sp 7fffd5779620 error 4 in libepplet.so.3.0.0[7f6fccc45

Oct 29 14:34:43 alchemy sudo:     root : TTY=tty1 ; PWD=/home/david ;
USER=root ; COMMAND=/usr/sbin/rcxdm restart

Sound works fine in other WM and even from the command line with play. So
somehow I have to reach an agreement with E-SD, or find a work-around that
will provide sound in e16.

I'm more than happy to provide you with any further information you may need
or want and I'm happy to run test cases, etc.. As mentioned in my prior post,
I have the source for both e16 and e17 on my laptop and both build fine (I
just can't figure out how to start them in /usr/local/...

Let me know what you think? I'll give anything a try. I am really impressed
with e (both 16 and 17) and I don't mind doing the work to make them better.
And, if a bug needs to be written or if I need to post this somewhere else,
let me know. Thanks.

P.S. (I really am running out of significant questions to ask. But there may
be a few more not insignificant ones.. :p )
