Thanks for all the replies, some great ideas.

I think that Klaas' idea is probably the road I'll travel today.  I am
loathed to really implement a large value in the spike remover as this
isn't my data, I'm just trying to get it cleaned up so it can go into the
corporate SDE.  If it removes valid geometry I'll never know.  I really
just wanted to know if I was using it correctly.

I have a SelfIntersector currently in the workbench but no area calculation
and filtration, so I'll give that a shot.
