This text consists of an English translation of the medieval book, Zohar
Harakia, an important source work on the analysis of the 613 commandments of
the Torah. The Zohar Harakia takes as a point of departure the poetic
enumeration of the commandments by Solomon ibn Gabirol. The author, Shimon
ben Zemach Duran, explains the often obscure language of ibn Gabirol. As an
accomplished Talmudic authority, he also explains the foundational
theoretical work on the enumeration by Maimonides, and the dissenting views
of Nachmanides. Thus, it serves as a summary of work on the enumeration of
the commandments up to the modern period. Duran's style is user friendly,
and the translation provides useful notes.
