[Jmol-users] New version of Jmol toolkit for crystallography journals

Dear Jmol community

The IUCr has just released a new beta version of its enhanced figures
toolkit to allow authors in IUCr journals to create and publish
figures with Jmol. [See the initial post early last year
http://www.mail-archive.com/jmol-users@list.../msg09834.html
and the Journal of Applied Crystallography paper I wrote with Bob Hanson
http://dx.doi.org/10.1107/S0021889808015616 ]

The new version represents the work of a summer-time undergraduate
student, Andrew French, who has done a great job in making the interface
much more user-friendly, and incorporating lots of the cool new features
introduced to Jmol in the last year. There are still several niggly little
bugs, but the general behaviour of the interface is now as we want it,
and we're hoping for early feedback on the new interface from authors.

Take-up of the original toolkit has been modest (there are usually a couple
of interactive figures in each monthly issue of Acta Cryst. E), but we're
expecting this version will have much more appeal to authors who are not
familiar with Jmol. You're welcome to test-drive the application at
http://submission.iucr.org/jtkt/edit/z/s/xM4m1861Ry3t7YdE/zz0000/640/520
(which is a read-only example - you can't save any changes you make);
or you may try your own examples at http://submission.iucr.org/jtkt

This will feature in an ICSTI Workshop in Paris next February on
"Interactive Publications and the Record of Science" (see
http://www.icsti.org), and I've also submitted an abstract for
the ACS Spring Symposium on the Future of Scholarly Publishing.

Thanks, as ever, to Bob Hanson and the other Jmol developers who
make this software such an incredibly useful and powerful tool for
research, education and investigation.

Cheers
Brian
