Neither did I.
Run your ..../configure with --disable-optimising so that when you 'make' you will have assert() enabled so you can see these debugging checks.

Searching for the definition of scm_or_str2smbol(), it is in lily-guile-macros.hh

so it looks like your use of
   SCM which_grob_extent = SCM_EOL; ... get_property (which_grob_extent)
was not considered valid use of get_property when it was designed.
