I think that this is completely unrelated to the staffsize issue.  Try
moving
your .ly and .lytex files into a new directory (ie so that there's no
leftover
.aux, .tex, lily-*, etc).  Then make sure that lilypond is installed
correctly
(try some simple examples from the manual.  Make sure that you try
the lilypond-book example template, too).  If all those work correctly,
then make sure that you've updated all your files to the current
version of lilypond.
