As a data point, the git checkout command line is documented at http://www.gnu.org/software/m4/

That's what I used when I had to take a look, and I too didn't know anything about git.

Real computer scientists despise the idea of actual hardware.  Hardware has
limitations, software doesn't.  It's a real shame that Turing machines are
so poor at I/O.
