Well, given that the behaviour is the same (whether it is an EZIP AFP Server or OS X AFP Server), I am not sure I agree with that remark. The topic itself is germane to OS X in general so I think it deserves the attention of this list (given that my Xserves are all running OS X).
True, it is using 5 credentialed connections, but that is because the syntax of mount_afp requires it. That's why I contacted this list, hoping there was a know workaround. I ultimately found one - it's called AppleScript (gagging sound).
Yes, Unlimited licenses are cheap but hey, why bother unless you have to.
