The Evening Bridge - July 27, 2006
---------------------------------------------------------------------
TOP STORY - Verizon said it will jump the speeds of its fiber-based FiOS broadband
service by installing equipment from Alcatel, Motorola and Tellabs later this year. The
telco said the equipment will be capable of increasing broadband speeds by up to
four times downstream and by up to eight times upstream via its FTTP network.
Present connections for FiOS broadband deliver downstream speeds ranging from up
to 5 Mbps to 50 Mbps and upstream speeds ranging from up to 2 Mbps to 5 Mbps. On
the video side, Verizon said the upgrade will improve its VOD services and help take
FiOS TV to an all IPTV network.

Comcast ended the second quarter with 10.5 million digital video subscribers, a 15
percent increase from a year ago. Comcast said the number of basic cable
subscribers fell during the second quarter due to seasonal disconnects, declining by
66,000 for a total of 21.657 million. Also, the cable giant added 305,000 broadband
subscribers, taking that sub base to 9.3 million, and 306,000 voice customers, for 1.7
million --- TiVo partnered with BellSouth to promote the stand-alone TiVo Series2
box and service to the telco's DSL customers --- XM Satellite Radio surpassed the 7
million subscriber mark.

BRIDGE Bonus
---------------------------------------------------------------------
>From this week's issue of The BRIDGE, focusing on small, independent cable
operators. "Much like the nation's biggest cable operators, independent MSOs are
beginning to feel the heat coming from emerging telco video services. However, like
their bigger MSO cousins, these operators say they're ready for the competition,
partly thanks to the battles they fought with the satellite TV companies during the
past decade. 'Competition is not a concern,' says Matt Polka, president and CEO of
the American Cable Association, representing small cable interests. 'Our members
have already faced serious competition, which has made them better operators.
However, what we continue to work for is to ensure that the federal government
does not create laws, rules and regulations that tip the balance of competition toward
one party or industry.'" For more on The BRIDGE check out
