i figure every once in a blue moon its worth expressing appreciation of
the idiocy of Paddy's so called scientific contributions to the list. as
with climate change, Paddy has demonstrated zero understanding of
nuclear energy and its technical possibilities and drawbacks. so he
instead plays the "you dont care about the ordinary people in distress
cuz all you talk about is radioactivity"  as if talking about one thing
precludes an appreciation of the other. it so happens its EASIER to
understand beta decay and its effects than to talk about how a social
system handles a disaster of this magnitude in this particular case. of
course, like anything else, Paddy is silent on the actual state of
affairs in Japan at a level taht would give us any insight. we'd need
people on the ground in Japan giving us insight into the disaster
recovery efforts. and of course anyone capable of thought would know
that people with such inside knowledge have far better things to do
right now than write to marxmail about the failings of the system in
regards to disaster recovery. we can expect that to come later, from
inside Japan. in the meantime, we outside of Japan can if we so choose
assess the nuclear state of affairs at Fukushima based on scientific and
technical appreciation of the issues in consort with knowlege of how the
capitalist system constructs and maintains these plants.

on the other hand, if someone here has such knowledge of the recovery
efforts in Japan, i think we'll find, contra Paddy's hot air, that most
of us would engage such information with the same interest we displayed
when it came to grappling with the social construction and handling of
the Katrina disaster  in New Orleans.
