Thanks for the help. I left some important details out. The server is a
chroot jail provided by cpanel... from strace screen I found that: Cannot
access '/dev/pts/4': No such file or directory.

It does not look like I have permission to create /dev/pts/4 . I did try
ssh -t . Unless there is a work around, I'm assuming I will not be able to
use screen.
