I am trying to get fetchmail working over imaps. I've got it working fine with
plain imap, but SSL is proving to be a bit tricky.

Once I enable imaps I get the following in the mail server logs -:

imapd-ssl: couriertls: accept: error:14094416:SSL
routines:SSL3_READ_BYTES:sslv3 alert certificate unknown

And doing a wireshark capture I see the following -:

TLSv1 Record Layer: Handshake Protocol: Client Hello
TLSv1 Record Layer: Handshake Protocol: Server Hello
TLSv1 Record Layer: Handshake Protocol: Certificate
TLSv1 Record Layer: Handshake Protocol: Server Hello Done
TLSv1 Record Layer: Alert (Level: Fatal, Description: Certificate Unknown)

Anyone any ideas what is going wrong?

This is on my own server with a cacert certificate, but it also does the same
when trying to connect to imap.gmail.com
