Retrans fights are getting down and dirty as broadcasters tighten the screws with warnings of potential blackouts. Latest case in point comes from DIRECTV's negotiations with
Hearst TV stations. Hearst warns subs that its stations could go off the air if it doesn't reach agreement with DIRECTV by Jan 1. Said a release from Hearst, it owns 29 television stations reaching 18% of US households and, oh yeah, those
stations "are recognized news leaders."

Meanwhile no word on the DISH/Chambers discussions. Dark spot deadline on that one is tomorrow.•

SkyLog: DIRECTV Argues SportsNet Philly; Internet Matches TV; New 3D Programming

Retrans & Renewals: In a recent ex parte filing on Comcast/NBC-U, DIRECTV hammers on Comcast's reticence to share its Philly sports nets with DBS providers.
Said DIRECTV, "Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia must be made subject to the same arbitration regime that applies to all other regional sports networks controlled by Comcast, and that any negotiating period otherwise required for a first-time carriage
request should be waived for DIRECTV and DISH Network, who have been requesting access to this programming for over a decade."

Gov't & Regs: Voices on the "not strong
enough" side of net neutrality are rising with Sen. Al Franken (D-MI) saying no rules would be better than weak rules and FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn saying she's still got
lots of questions, including about wireless broadband. Look for lots more like this (both con and pro) as we roll toward the Dec. 21 date for a FCC decision.

Analyze This: The latest from Forrester Research shows Americans spending as much time with the internet as their TVs. What's more, the survey says, 33% of adults now say they watch video on the internet, up from 18% just three years ago. Speaking to the NYT,
Forrester analyst Jacqueline Anderson said the rise in internet use does not necessarily lead to a drop in TV viewing. Rather, the use of media on the whole is on the rise.

Programming:   Six new titles have been added to the programming slate for the Sony/Discovery/IMAX 3D   channel.  Among these: "Bullproof" about the sport of bull riding;   "High Octane," featuring X sports of various kinds;
and "Making the Brand" about how products are produced on a mass scale. --- ESPN is beginning its year-long "Year of the Quarterback" initiative today with a 60-minute primetime show at 10 p.m. ET. --- Showtime's
"Dexter" closed season five with a bang: 2.5M viewers, which matches last year.

The Deal: Senate Commerce Committee Chair Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) says he doesn't
like the deal. "Worry," "fear" and "concern over the $30B Comcast/NBC-U combo surfaced in a letter from Rockefeller to FCC Chair Julius Genachowski.

Partnerships & Deals: ESPN has purchased substantially all of the intellectual property of Cablevision's PVI Virtual Media
Services. That gives the sports giant the patents and the personnel to further boost its strength in virtual insertions, player tracking, iTV apps plus 3D graphics developments.

Up in the Sky:
Working with the Joint Program Executive Office, ViaSat has demonstrated the potential for a commercial network in the sky, using mobile SATCOM networks plus the Joint Tactical Radio System to interconnect air, land and sea forces into an integrated tactical network capable of distributing
voice, video and sensor data around the world. --- Last chance to save more than $600 on the Satellite 2011 conference ends tomorrow. To register, go here. --- Japan's Broadcasting
Satellite System says its BSat-3b satellite is now operational and ready to broadcast HD channels to homes and businesses across Japan. --- SES ASTRA has signed a capacity agreement with the Ukraine's state-owned Ukrkosmos video distributor. --- The Bolivian government will purchase a $300M communications satellite from China Great Wall Industries.•
