RS&I, Dow Electronics Sign Sling Media Deals


RS&I announced last week it landed a distribution agreement with Sling Media to provide the Slingbox and SlingLink to its retailers.  Slingbox is a consumer electronics device that enables consumers to turn virtually any Internet-connected Windows-based computer into a personal TV.  It redirects a single live TV stream from a basic aerial connection, cable box, satellite receiver or digital video recorder to the viewer's PC or mobile phone, no matter where it is located.  

SlingLink is like an extension cord for the internet and uses existing electrical wiring in the home to transmit the Ethernet signal from the customer's router.  Plug one SlingLink into the wall near the router and plug the other wherever the Slinbox is installed to be connected to the internet.  

Not only can you watch your home TV from any Internet-connected PC, you can control the TV, change channels, watch shows recorded on your DVR, and set up shows to record.  

Slingbox and SlingLink are available in RS&I's eight warehouses.  Interested retailers should contact the closest RS&I location or call 1-800-825-7999.  

In related news, Dow Electronics signed a distribution agreement with Sling Media and will begin training its retailers on Sling Media products starting the first week in August.

Syntax-Brillian Announces New Olevia LCD TVs


Syntax-Brillian Corp., manufacturer and marketer of LCD and LCoS HDTVs and digital entertainment products, recently announced the launch of a new line of LCD TVs under the company's Olevia brand.  The collection of Olevia LCD TVs consists of the "3 Series," "5 Series" and "7 Series."

The Olevia 3 Series LCD HDTV Ready TVs are intended for general consumer use and display digital programming whether received via cable and satellite set-top boxes or broadcast tuner, and when displaying images from a DVD, VCR or camcorder.  The Olevia 5 Series provides video and audio quality for a high-definition cinematic experience at an affordable price, while Olevia 7 Series has Hollywood Quality Video (HQV)

The LCD TV series feature technology engineered by Syntax-Brillian and leverage the best performance attributes of technologies including Pixelworks DNX, ATI Xilleon, MTK MDDI and Silicon Optix HQV.  The Olevia 3 and 5 Series models support up to 1080i resolution while the Olevia 7 Series supports 1080p.  All the models are designed to ensure clarity of lower-resolution standard analog TV channels, high-definition digital programs, VHS tape content and DVDs.  The LCD TVs also function as computer monitors with PC compatibility featuring up to 1366 by 768 resolution on the Olevia 3 and 5 Series TVs on both the VGA and HDMI inputs and the Olevia 7 Series can display 1920 by 1080 resolution.  

Olevia 5 Series LCD TVs are available from Syntax-Brillian's select national and regional retailer partners.  The Olevia 3 Series and 7 Series LECD TVs should be introduced to the market throughout September.

Panasonic Debuts HDTV Photo Player


Panasonic recently introduced the HDTV Photo Player DMW-SDP1 that allows users to view photos taken by a LUMIX or other SD-enabled digital camera in high definition quality on a large screen TV like Panasonic's line of Plasma TVs.  The DMW-SDP1 will cost $129.95 MSRP.  

Users can view their photos in 1080i high definition quality by connecting the SDP1 to a high definition TV and inserting their SD/SDHC memory card into the slot.  The DMW-SDP1 is compact and lightweight, and differs from other photo viewers by using the Venus Engine III image processing LSI.  

Other features of the DMW-SDP1 are a variety of playback options including three special transition effects to allow for greater creative to on-screen slideshows.  In preview mode the photo player offers rapid image search, displaying up to 25 thumbnails on an index screen or calendar time-series screen, and images taken vertically are rotated.  The player also offers high definition motion image (1280 by 720, at 15 fps) with natural detail reproduction that is recordable with the LUMIX new model DMC-lX2.

RadioShack Announces 2Q06 Earnings


RadioShack, last week announced, its second quarter financial results, including a net loss of $3 million or 2 cents per share.  The company says that earnings results were adversely affected by lower sales of wireless, especially post-paid products in RadioShack stores.  

The company's pre-tax earnings were reduced by $21 million due to cost in connection with the company's turnaround plan and related restructuring activities including lease terminations, store liquidations, inventory reserves and fixed asset write-downs.  The company also incurred a pre-tax expense of $8.5 million in connected to the preliminary settlement of certain wage-and-hour class action lawsuits.
