That is because so many here erroneously use the phrase "Gnome 3" to
refer to the "Gnome 3 Shell".  Unity, Gnome 3 Shell, Kubuntu, and
Xubuntu all sit on top of Gnome 3.  Several other distros dirivative of
Ubuntu also, obviously, use Gnome 3 (not the Shell).  Also, Mint has two
Debian based distros that use Gnome 3, but use XFCE or Cinnamon for the
desktop.  SolusOS  currently ships Gnome 2 and has begun development on
a Gnome2  exact lookalike, but sitting on top of Gnome 3.
