Yes, indeed.  You did say that.  And I said that Kubuntu "sat on top of"
Gnome2/Gnome3

Ryan, if you don't like the way I state things, then, in the spirit of
friendliness, try to imagine what I might be trying to say.  This whole
unpleasant business started as an attempt to answer your query.  I can't
say that I am inclined to do that again.

All I can offer is my own experiences.  I have installed and used
several varients of all of the different guis discussed.   I'll stick to
the Ubuntu list.  Xubuntu and Kubunto both contain pretty complete
contents of Ubuntu, i.e. all of the gnome applications including some
that are considered part of the gnome DE, such as Nautilus.  It's
software.  A knowledgable programmer can replace any part or all of a
gui with another.

Just curious, did you ever get your question answered? "Is Unity also a
shell for GNOME? It's a bit confusing..."  It appears that you are no
longer confused.
