How do I detect an installed URI handler?

So I've got an application that registers for the mycustomhandler:// scheme
using the CFBundleURLSchemes plist key. Now, how can I tell from within my
Safari/WebKit-displayed JavaScript content whether that scheme is handled,
so I can go ahead and automatically launch mycustomhandler://blahblahblah,
or I need to display a 'please go get this application' message?

and someone's outlining you in chalk.
